DPOP Second Saturday Meeting

September 8, 2018 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

Join us this Saturday for our monthly Second Saturday meeting, at a special location - the Veterans Room at Oak Park Library.

Our special guests will be Cook County State's Attorney Kim Foxx, and congressional candidates Sean Casten and Lauren Underwood.

As Cook County State's Attorney, Kim Foxx manages the nation's second largest prosecutor's office and oversees an office of over nearly 800 attorneys and 1,500 employees. Since she was elected in November, 2016, Kim Foxx has worked to transform the Cook County State's Attorney's office into a fairer, more forward-thinking agency, focused on rebuilding the public trust, promoting transparency, and being proactive in making all communities safe. Foxx was born in Chicago and grew up in the Cabrini-Green housing project. She attended Lincoln Park High School and received her undergraduate and law degrees from Southern Illinois University. Foxx was previously chief of staff to Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle. Prior to that, she was an assistant state's attorney for Cook County.

Sean Casten is a scientist, engineer, entrepreneur, and clean energy executive running against Rep. Peter Roskum in the 6th District. Casten's objective in congress will be "to bring policy to Washington that is based on facts - not fear." For two decades, running his own companies and advising others, he has been at the forefront of discovering innovative ways to make reducing carbon emissions a successful business strategy. Casten has undergraduate degrees in molecular biology and biochemistry from Middlebury College, and master's degrees in engineering management and biochemical engineering from Dartmouth College. He will help bring critical thinking and thoughtful decision making back to Washington, where currently only five members of congress identify as scientists.

Lauren Underwood is a registered nurse, public policy advisor, and teacher running against Rep. Randy Hultgren in the 14th District. Underwood grew up in Naperville and attended Neuqua Valley High School. She received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Michigan, and master's degrees in nursing, public health, and public policy from Johns Hopkins University. Underwood was appointed by President Obama to serve as a Senior Advisor at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. She also worked with a Medicaid plan in Chicago to ensure that it provided high-quality, cost-efficient care, and as a teacher, preparing future nurse practitioners through Georgetown University's online master's program. Underwood will bring her firsthand knowledge to Washington and work to propose measures that will preserve and expand access to healthcare for Illinois families.

Join us for what promises to be a very informative meeting.
